A Family Experience at the Bull Run

On September 7th, 2024, our family ventured to witness the Bull Run in Camarma de Esteruelas—a thrilling and deeply rooted cultural event. The atmosphere was buzzing as thousands of spectators gathered behind 2-meter-tall barricades, eagerly awaiting the start. A loud firecracker pierced the air, signaling the release of the first group—three heifers adorned with bells around their necks, clanging loudly as they raced down the street.

These heifers set the pace, but the real excitement began as the first bull was released, charging after the daring runners. Each bull was released one at a time, and when it entered the Plaza de Toros, another firecracker went off to signal the next. The second bull, however, caused quite the scene. It got stuck halfway through the path, nearly destroying the barricaded gate set up to contain it, sending a jolt of adrenaline through the crowd.

Our oldest son felt uneasy from the start, and after witnessing a runner nearly get gored by the bull, he decided he had seen enough. He was ready to head home. In contrast, our youngest was completely enthralled by the event, wanting to stay and watch as the action unfolded. Since I was photographing the event, my wife Bethany took the boys home.

While the experience was a mixed bag for our family, it offered a firsthand glimpse into a local tradition that combines culture, thrill, and community. Though intense for some, it was an unforgettable day that will stay with us in different ways.

We captured some incredible moments from the Bull Run, and we’d love for you to experience the excitement through our photos! Check them out and get a closer look at this thrilling cultural tradition. Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below—we’d love to hear what you think!
